Overview

Bomberos in Spain are not a single national body: they are organised regionally and municipally, through comunidades autónomas, consorcios provinciales and ayuntamientos. This matters more than anything else for candidates, because it is the convocatoria of the specific service you apply to that fixes the exact format: the number of psicotécnico questions, the time limit, the physical standards and the weighting of each stage. What is consistent is the factor pattern, the same factors as the Policía Nacional psicotécnico (Numérico, Verbal, Espacial, Abstracto, Perceptivo/Atención, Memoria), with extra weight on Perceptivo/Atención, plus a demanding set of pruebas físicas and, very often, a mechanical or technical component.

Application Process

1

Convocatoria (region / consorcio / ayuntamiento)

Per convocatoria

Each service publishes its own convocatoria in its official bulletin. It sets the plazas, the exact test format, the temario and the baremo. Read it before you start preparing. Do not assume another region's format applies.

2

Psicotécnico

Per convocatoria

Aptitude test with the standard Spanish factor pattern: Numérico, Verbal, Espacial, Abstracto, Perceptivo/Atención and Memoria, with extra weight typically placed on Perceptivo/Atención. Many convocatorias add a mechanical/technical component.

3

Personality Questionnaire & Psychological Interview

Half day

Personality questionnaire, commonly scored APTO / NO APTO, contrasted with an interview with a psychologist. Stress tolerance and teamwork are central.

4

Pruebas Físicas

1-2 days

The most demanding physical stage of any Spanish emergency service oposición: endurance, upper-body and grip strength, climbing, load carrying and a course under time. Standards are set by the convocatoria.

5

Examen Teórico & Práctico

Per convocatoria

Knowledge exam on the temario (fire behaviour, rescue, hydraulics, construction, hazardous materials, local legislation) and, in many services, a practical exercise.

Test Types

Psicotécnico de Aptitudes

Used by: Spanish psychometric publishers (TEA Ediciones formats are the reference standard)

Per convocatoria

Numérico, Verbal, Espacial, Abstracto, Perceptivo/Atención and Memoria, with extra weight on Perceptivo/Atención. The exact number of questions and the time limit are set by the convocatoria of the service you apply to, so they vary between regions and municipalities.

Mecánico / Técnico

Used by: Spanish psychometric publishers (TEA Ediciones formats are the reference standard)

Per convocatoria

A mechanical and technical reasoning component appears in many Bomberos convocatorias: gears, levers, pulleys, hydraulics and basic physical principles applied to rescue and firefighting equipment.

Mecánico (Bomberos style): Two meshed gears are connected. Gear A has 20 teeth and turns clockwise at 60 rpm. Gear B has 40 teeth. At what speed and in which direction does Gear B turn?

Insider Tips

Start with the convocatoria, not with a textbook. Bomberos are organised regionally and municipally, so the service you apply to sets the number of questions, the time limit, the physical standards and the weighting.

Perceptivo/Atención carries extra weight. Drill fast, accurate comparison of symbols, sequences and figures until it is automatic.

The Mecánico component is very learnable: gears, levers, pulleys and basic hydraulics. Candidates from a non-technical background gain the most marks here per hour of study.

The pruebas físicas are the hardest part of the process for most candidates and are eliminatory. Train for 6-12 months, with a focus on grip, upper body and load carrying, not just running.

The nota de corte is set per convocatoria and moves with the number of plazas and the number of candidates; it is often not published in advance. Do not aim at a threshold, aim at your maximum score.

The factor pattern is the same as the Policía Nacional psicotécnico, so material prepared for one transfers directly to the other.
